West End vs. West Bay: where should you stay for Scuba Diving in Roatan?

Roatan Divers, dive shop in West End

Planning a scuba diving vacation in Roatan, Honduras? One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is where to stay. Two of the island’s most popular destinations are West End and West Bay. Both offer beautiful Caribbean waters, colorful coral reefs, tropical sunshine, and incredible opportunities to explore the underwater world. However, each area offers a different vacation experience.

So, which is better for your next dive trip: West End or West Bay?

At Roatan Divers, we’re based in West End, one of Roatán’s favorite destinations for scuba divers. But that doesn’t mean you have to stay here to enjoy amazing diving! Let’s compare both areas to help you choose the perfect home base for your Roatán adventure.

West End: The Perfect Base for Scuba Divers

West End is a lively Caribbean village known for its relaxed atmosphere, dive shops, waterfront restaurants, small grocery stores, and beautiful Half Moon Bay. It’s especially popular with travelers who want to spend their days underwater and their evenings enjoying local food, meeting fellow divers, and watching spectacular Caribbean sunsets.

Easy Access to Incredible Dive Sites

One of the biggest advantages of staying in West End is the convenient access to some of Roatan’s most exciting dive sites. Short boat rides take you to vibrant coral gardens, dramatic walls, swim-throughs, and fascinating underwater landscapes.

Whether you’re a beginner completing your first certification or an experienced diver looking for your next underwater challenge, there’s something for everyone.

Some of our favorite dive sites include Hole in the Wall, Blue Channel, and Canyon Reef. Depending on the site and conditions, you may encounter sea turtles, eagle rays, moray eels, colorful reef fish, and an incredible variety of coral.

One of the biggest advantages of diving with Roatan Divers is how close we are to so many amazing sites. Thanks to our location in West End and our fast boats, we can reach many of the surrounding dive sites in just 5–10 minutes.

That means less time traveling by boat and more time enjoying what you came to Roatan for: diving!

A Walkable Village with Plenty to Do

Another reason divers love West End is its convenience. Many accommodations, dive shops, restaurants, small grocery stores, gift shops, and bars are within walking distance of one another.

After a morning of diving, you can enjoy lunch by the water, relax with a tropical drink, explore the village, or share stories with other divers. You don’t need to plan your entire day around transportation.

West End also offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly guesthouses to boutique hotels and vacation rentals. This makes it an excellent choice for solo travelers, couples, groups of friends, and divers planning a longer stay.

A Great Place to Learn and Improve Your Diving Skills

If you’re interested in learning to scuba dive or expanding your experience, West End is an excellent place to start. One of its biggest advantages is Half Moon Bay, where a designated area is closed to boat traffic, providing a convenient location for introductory scuba diving sessions and snorkeling.

The protected area makes it easier to get comfortable in the water, practice your skills, and enjoy the reef. As always, diving activities should take place with appropriate supervision and according to local conditions.

Ready to take your diving to the next level? You can work toward your PADI Open Water Diver certification, continue with Advanced Open Water training, or explore specialties such as wreck diving, underwater photography, and enriched air Nitrox, depending on your interests and qualifications.

With so many underwater adventures available, every trip can be an opportunity to learn something new.

West Bay: A Beach Lover’s Paradise

West Bay is famous for its beautiful white-sand beach, clear turquoise water, and beachfront resorts. If your ideal Caribbean vacation includes relaxing beside the ocean, swimming in warm water, and enjoying a resort-style atmosphere, West Bay could be the perfect choice.

Beautiful Beaches and Easy Snorkeling

West Bay Beach is one of Roatan’s most recognizable attractions. Its sandy shoreline and inviting water make it a favorite for beach lovers, families, and travelers who want to combine relaxation with marine adventures.

The reef lies close to parts of the beach, creating opportunities for snorkeling when conditions are suitable. You may see colorful reef fish and beautiful coral formations without needing to book a boat trip.

However, boat traffic can be busy in certain areas. Always use designated swimming and snorkeling areas, follow local safety advice, and consider using a brightly colored surface marker buoy where appropriate. Never swim into boat channels, and avoid touching or standing on coral.

Resorts, Restaurants, and Relaxation

West Bay is particularly appealing to travelers who prefer beachfront accommodation and resort amenities. You can spend the morning snorkeling, enjoy lunch near the beach, and relax by the water in the afternoon.

It’s also a great option for groups where some people want to scuba dive while others prefer swimming, sunbathing, or simply enjoying the Caribbean scenery.

Accommodation and dining options vary in price, from casual restaurants to upscale beachfront resorts. If you want a relaxing vacation where the beach is right outside your door, West Bay is hard to beat.

Staying in West Bay but want to dive with us? No problem!

At Roatan Divers, we offer a pickup service for divers staying in West Bay. We can arrange for our boat to pick you up in the morning, take you out for two dives, and drop you off afterward, subject to arrangements and sea conditions.

You can enjoy the comfort of a beachfront resort while still exploring Roatán’s incredible underwater world with us.

What About Scuba Diving from West Bay?

You can absolutely enjoy excellent scuba diving while staying in West Bay. The surrounding western coastline is home to the same spectacular reef system that attracts divers from around the world.

In fact, we regularly dive in the West Bay area! Some of our favorite sites include West End Wall, Texas, and Mandy’s Eel Garden, all accessible by a short boat ride from our shop.

Whether you stay in West End or West Bay, you can experience colorful reefs, fascinating marine life, and unforgettable underwater landscapes.

At Roatan Divers, we have access to more than 80 dive sites around the island. The sites we visit depend on weather, sea conditions, diver experience, and the best conditions for each day’s dives.

So, you don’t need to worry about missing out on great diving just because you choose to stay in one area instead of the other.

West End vs. West Bay: Which Is Better for Your Dive Vacation?

Honestly, the best choice depends on the kind of vacation you want.

Choose West End if you:

  • Want a dive-focused vacation with dive shops and restaurants nearby.

  • Enjoy a lively, friendly village atmosphere.

  • Prefer having plenty of places to eat, shop, and socialize within walking distance.

  • Prefer beachfront resorts and a more resort-oriented atmosphere.

  • Want to combine scuba diving with snorkeling, swimming, and relaxing.

  • Don’t mind arranging transportation or a boat pickup to enjoy the night life.
