Why should I work during my gap year?
Working as a dive professional during your gap year is a fun and practical way to fund your travels. Scuba divers are some of the world's most travel-minded people, so you'll constantly meet fellow adventurers from different countries and cultures. Whether you're guiding dives or teaching courses, working as a Divemaster or Instructor opens the door to incredible destinations and unforgettable experiences.
Once you've completed your Divemaster or Instructor training, you can use the PADI Job Board to find employment opportunities at dive resorts around the world. Many dive centers and resorts offer full-time contracts in beautiful tropical destinations, and some even assist with work visas and provide staff accommodation as part of the employment package.
If you prefer more flexibility, many dive centers work with freelance dive professionals. As a freelance Divemaster or Instructor, you can choose when and where you work, accepting jobs based on your availability and travel plans. This allows you to earn money while still enjoying the freedom to explore new places, take time off, and make the most of your gap year.
Freelance work is also an excellent option for digital nomads or anyone with a remote job who wants to combine their career with a passion for diving. You can continue working online while leading dives or teaching courses during your free time, creating the perfect balance between work, travel, and adventure.

How can I work as a Dive Professional during my gap year?
If you're already an Open Water Diver or Advanced Open Water Diver, you can become a dive professional, either a PADI Divemaster or PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, in as little as five to six weeks through an intensive training program.
Even if you've never scuba dived before, it's possible to start from zero and become a PADI Divemaster in as little as four months, or a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor in approximately six months. It's an incredible opportunity to turn a passion for diving into a career while gaining skills that can take you anywhere in the world.
Divemaster is the first level of professional diving, which allows you to work assisting instructors during their courses and guiding certified divers. PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors can teach PADI courses and experiences all the way from Discover Scuba Diving to Open Water to Divemaster. As a PADI Divemaster or Instructor, you'll also gain hands-on experience in customer service by working with people from all over the world.
