Uniting Women Divers: Roatan’s PADI Women’s Dive Day
Every year, on the third Saturday in July, the global diving community comes together to celebrate PADI Women's Dive Day. More than just a day of diving, Women’s Dive Day has become an important opportunity for women to connect, enjoy, and learn together. Since its inception in 2015, PADI dive centers have come together to promote and celebrate women's participation in the sport, encourage new female divers, and highlight the incredible contributions women make to ocean conservation and exploration.
Before this initiative, diving was largely a male-dominated sport. However, PADI Women's Dive Day has been a driving force for positive change, creating a more inclusive and welcoming environment. In the last ten years, PADI Members have hosted events in 183 countries, fostering connections, building confidence, and inspiring women of all ages and backgrounds to discover the underwater world.
Women By the Numbers
WOMEN IN DIVING
While women historically accounted for less than 35% of PADI certifications globally, this is changing quickly. In fact, female certifications are now growing faster than men's. Women now represent nearly 40% of all recreational divers worldwide.
We’ve come a long way in creating balance and opportunity in diving, but there is still work to do. While women are diving more than ever, only about 20% of PADI Professionals are women, and that number drops to approximately 15% at the Course Director level (according to a 2022 PADI statistic). But don’t let these numbers fool you; women’s momentum in diving is undeniable.
Why Should Dive Shops Hire Female Dive Instructors?
Hiring women dive instructors isn’t just about fairness, it’s a smart business move that strengthens your dive operation in multiple ways:
Better Customer Engagement & Comfort
Female instructors often bring a more intuitive and relational teaching style, creating a supportive and empathetic learning environment, especially valuable for beginner divers.
Many women, particularly first-time or solo travelers, feel more comfortable learning from a female instructor, which can increase trust, satisfaction, and course completion rates.
Greater Team Diversity = Stronger Operations
Gender-diverse teams offer broader perspectives, stronger communication, and improved problem-solving, key traits in a fast-paced, safety-critical environment like diving. A balanced team enhances both guest experience and internal dynamics.
Powerful Role Models that Inspire
Visibility matters. Showcasing women in leadership and instructional roles encourages more women to enter the diving world, both as divers and professionals. This not only widens your customer base but positions your dive shop as inclusive, forward-thinking, and community-oriented.
Let’s empower every diver, below and above the water.
Roatan’s Women Dive Together
On June 19th, Roatan’s women in diving came together once again to celebrate PADI Women’s Dive Day. This was the second year in a row that local dive shops joined forces for this special community event, and we were proud to welcome the participation of Roatan Divers, West End Divers, Reef Gliders, and Naboo Divers, bringing together a total of 47 incredible women divers.
After the dives, the girls gathered at Tita's to celebrate and spend time socializing!
