El Aguila wreck is one of the most popular scuba diving sites on Roatan, and there's a good reason why. El Aguila was sunk in 1997 to provide a good wreck for Roatan within the recreational limits, and was broken into three pieces in 1998 when Hurricane Mitch hit. Since the wreck was sunk next to the reef, you get a one-two punch of a cool artificial reef as well as a spectacular natural reef covered in soft coral. The reef next to wreck is one of our favorite areas, and we love all the big black groupers and snappers that hang out.
We were very lucky this day, it was just two videographers out at the wreck so we had the whole place to ourselves! Eagle rays don't often come by the wreck but one decided to grace us with its presence that day as well. What a fantastic dive!
